European University confirms campus opening in Gijón for 2027-2028 with dual approach

European University has confirmed plans to open a campus in Gijón by the 2027-2028 academic year through two parallel initiatives. The first involves establishing the European University of Asturias, pending regulatory approvals and regional parliament consent. The second, aimed at speeding up the process, is opening a center affiliated with the European University of Madrid, a legally supported and transparent route already used in Spain. Gijón's city hall supports the project, providing land at La Pecuaria within the expanding Science and Technology Park and assuring ongoing assistance. Mayor Carmen Moriyón emphasized the city's demand for the regional government of Asturias to treat this request with urgency comparable to similar university affiliations recently approved locally. The new campus plans to offer 14 programs from the start, including 12 undergraduate degrees and 2 postgraduate courses. Facilities will cover over 7,000 square meters, featuring practical learning resources like a simulation hospital and laboratories, and will preserve extensive green areas. Similar affiliation paths have been adopted by other universities entering Asturias, such as Nebrija in Avilés and Alfonso X in Oviedo, indicating a positive trend for higher education development in the region.
